ANNUAL REPORT OF VIDIYEL TRUST 2015 – 2016

 

Introduction

Vidiyel Trust facilitates Kilavilathikulam watershed development project with the financial attribution of NABARD in 1400 hectares that would benefits the rural masses in 7 villages of Kilavilathikulam region. We constituted Kilavilathikulam village watershed committee (KVWC) that comprises of representatives of Panchayat Raj Institution, village elders and agricultural farmers. The KVWC has 33 per cent women representatives. It has been legally registered under Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975. The KVWC acts as a project implementing body. After successful completion of CBP and IP, FIP started during this year with NABARD support.

Purpose of the Project

The prime intention of the programme is to enrich the water resources for local communities to advance sustainable agricultural practices. For each structure, NABARD contributes 84% and the remaining 16% is contributed by the community.

 

 

Major Activities Executed in the Reporting Period

  • Under Full Implementation Phase (FIP), 100 farm ponds with inlet and outlet pipes, 11 sunken ponds and 12500 Rmt field bunds have been created for controlling of the overflow of water during rainy seasons.
  • 1625 Dry land horticulture seedlings were supplied to women members to plant the seedlings in their backyard and kitchen garden.
  • 2500 seedlings were planted in the field to develop Agro forest in the watershed area.
  • Conducted awareness programme on importance of soil test, modern  ploughing and cultivation techniques, organic farming, pest management, marketing strategy for effective cultivation and better price for their produces.
  • Organic farming was encouraged by vermin compost and panchakavya demo plots developed and training also imparted to farmers.
  • Short term cultivaton loan of Rs. 5000 each was provided to 40 small and marginal farmers to purchase hybrid seeds and bio fertilisers, micro nutirents.
  • Launching of Village level veterinary camps aiming at immunization against seasonal infectious diseases and artificial insemination to cows. Goat, sheep, dog, country birds and ducks were treated for several diseases in four villages ie. Ayanbommiahpur, Vilvamarathupatti, K.Sundareswarapuram and P.Meenkshipuram

Impacts Assessed              

  • The targeted farmers have successfully utilised the farm ponds for agricultural irrigation with prudent water practices. Of whom a significant proportion of them have better agricultural productivity.

 

  • Most focused farmers are using pumps with oil engines for chilli cultivation by which they promptly irrigated and saved crop. Consequently they got better yield than the other farmers those who fully depend seasonal rain only.
  • A success of the farmers with better yields have created a multiplier effect i.e the farmers in the neighbour villages are also interested to install farm pond for their agricultural practices.
  • All the members of the village committee were actively participated in the meetings and showed their inclination in raising a watershed structure for the benefits of their villagers.
  • Landless women SHG federation members have been assisted for starting self employment activities with the funds available under women livelihood development

Women Livelihood programme

 

Introduction

Socialisation and saving habits have prominently increased among the women self-help groups but they often fail as entrepreneurs. Thus, to enable them to become successful women entrepreneurs by engaging and overcoming the business troubles, it has been planned to provide coaching for them.

Purpose

The purpose of the women development programme is to enrich and enhance the quality of life of the rural women.

Major Activities Executed in the Reporting Period

  • Provided business counselling for 81 women who planned to start up trade activities.
  • Facilitated the women to avail loan for carrying out income generation activities.
  • Facilitated a good number of groups to function independently with the support of panchayat level federation.

Impacts Assessed

  • About 43 women started up income generation programmes and most of them are successfully running up the trade.
  • There is a need for further skill upgradation amongst some of members involved in the promotion of income generation programmes.

 

 

 
Vidiyel Trust with the support of AIMS India Foundation, USA, runs Student Development Centres in 30 villages of 3 clusters (Kanyakumari, Kolachel and Nilgiris). Totally 1139 rural poor children are being benefitted from these centres, where they have increased space to enhance their academic and vocational skills. Each centre has a qualified teacher and every centre has 5 volunteers. The 30 qualified teachers in day time act as para-teachers in local regular schools and in the evening hours they coach the rural children in the centres.Introduction

Purpose

The project objective is to enhance the academic and life education of the poor and marginalised children.

Major Activities Executed in the Reporting Period

  • Supporting Para-Teacher at Government High School in Kodangipatti in Vilathikulam block.
  • Provided learning materials to all the children in the centre.
  • Conducted sports and cultural events to the children and the winners and other participants were given prizes.
  • Provided vocabulary improvisation skills to the children in Tamil, English and Hindi.

Impacts Assessed

  • Kodangipatti Govt. High school has scored 100% result in 10th public exam for the last 6 consecutive years as a result of para Teacher support provided by AIMS india to run special coaching classes during evening and night study for the students at school premises itself.
  • Most focused children have increased their reading and writing skills in both Tamil and English.
  • Many children showed their interests in participating in sports and cultural events and a quite number of children have revealed their potentials, when provided chances.

 

 

 

Under PM Jan dhan yojana, and marking the foundation day of NABARD, Finanial literacy awareness camp was organized by Viidyel Trust  with the assistance of  NABARD.on 10th July 2015 at Vilathikulam.  About 100 participants comprising farmers & women federation members and other villagers  participated in this programme  from surrounding villages of vilathikulam.

The programme was started with lighting of lamp by chief guests. Sri.Navaneethakrishnan, Kilavilathikulam panchayat president welcomed the chief guests and  gathering.

Smt..Lakshmi, MD, Thoothukudi Dt. Central cooperative bank delivered presidential address.. Then the programme proceeded with inaugural speeches of  Sri. Prabhakar, District  Lead bank manager Sri.Vijayapandian , DDM, NABARD, Sri.Subbiah, Regional Manager, PGB and Sri.Karthikeyan, Financial literacy counselor Thoothukudi. They  explained the role of NABARD in the sustainable development of agriculture and allied industries, rural development, crop insurance, Jan Dhan Yojana, Jeevan Jothi Bima Yojana, Sureksha Bima Yojana of Prime Minister and also the Atal Pension Yojana etc.

Paripooranan, Manager, State Bank of India, Sivakumar , Manager, Pandian Gram Bank, Durai, Manager, Senthil kumar, Assistant Manager Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank,  explained in detail various services provided by banks. and how to open a bank account under Jan Dhan Yojana, Atal Pension Scheme and Prime Minister’s insurance schemes. Karthikeyan,  Financial literacy counselor narrated about Pictorial exhibition arranged  on financial literacy process.

After lunch an interaction session with the participants and bankers was held. Bankers vividly clarified various questions raised by the participants about banking services and schemes.

 

In order to sensitise the village leaders and NGOs in Thoothukudi  area, 2 programme  on capacity building  of  environmental impact assessment process were organised by Vidiyel trust with the support of Consumer Action Group on 16th and 29th Aug  2015 in Vilathikulam and Thoothukudi respectively in which 20 and 24  social activist and NGO representatives participated.

 

Mr.Arun Prasad from CAG delivered introductory speech about the backdrop, objective of the meeting et.c particularly about the environmental issues to be faced by exisiting and coming up Thermal Plants in Thoothukudi dt. Necessary study materials were distributed to participants. Documentary film on these aspects were screened and explained in Vilathikulam meeting.   Mr.Subbiah, Regional Manager, Pandyan Grama Bank, Thoothukudi presided over the program and delivered special address on environmental issues in thoothukudi surroundings particularly affecting the agriculture lands and farmers in particular.

Mr.K.S.Kumaravelu, Project Manager, Vidiyel Trust welcomed the gathering and delivered introductory speech about the backdrop, objective of the meeting etc. particularly about environmental issues particularly pollution affected the surroundings of Thoothukudi by existing Thermal plants and warning on proposed plants in Thoothukudi dt..  A discussion was mooted about what type of role is needed from the villagers in this area   At this juncture. In addition cultural awareness songs on environmental issues were performed by  two participants.

A group discussion was arranged to get the views, comments and follow up action to be taken by the participants with the guidance of Vidiyel Trust.

 

Introduction

Vidiyel Trust with the support of NABARD formed NABARD Farmers’ Clubs in 14 villages (Ayan Bommaiyapuram, Vilvamarathupatti, Idaichiyurani, Meenachipuram, Kumara Shankanapuram, Lakshmipuram, Periyasamipuram, Velidupatti, Kuruvarpatti, Virusampatti, Atrankarai, Thoppampatti, K.Subaiyapuram and Kumarapuram).

Purpose

The NABARD farmers’ clubs aimed to contribute for the education and association of the farmers to have access to socio-economic and technological resources of the State.

Major Activities Executed in the Reporting Period

  • Conducted interface meetings of the farmers’ clubs with the experts, Veterinary Doctor, Manager of Soil Test Centre, Assistant Director (Agri), Assistant Agricultural Officer, Agro-Engineer Department, etc.
  • Conducted sensitisation meetings for the farmers on veterinary care. Dr.Kannabiran, Veterinary Doctor gave inputs on vet care.
  • The farmers clubs held weekly meetings to discuss about various agricultural issues.
  • Orientation camp was conducted for the Farmers club members at agriculture EXPO organized by TNAU at Madurai.

Impacts Assessed

  • Increased coordination among the farmers resulted through their association in the clubs.
  • Tamilnadu Mercantile bank vilathikulam  branch extended  Kisan Credit Card to 55  farmers club members Rs.50000 each .
  • The members of the Farmers’ Clubs have passed resolution to federate all the clubs and to strengthen their combined and concerted efforts as a result VVVV federation has been promoted as Vialthikulam Farmers producer Company..

 

 

Introduction

As a result of effective functioning of Vilathikulam Vattara Vilaiporul Urpathyalarkal koottamaippusince 2012, NABARD has extended it support to promote it as a producer company. Based on that Vilathikulam Farmers Producer company incorporated on 18th Dec 2015 with 1000 share holders.

Purpose

The purpose of the company is to ensure increased collectivity among the farmers through which enhancing their marketing for their agricultural products.

 

Major Activities Executed in the Reporting Period

  • Formal Inauguration of the company held on 25th Feb 2016 at Vilathikulam.Then General Managerof NABARD Mr. Rabindranath inaugurated the company. Around 500 Share holders participated in the inaugural function.
  • NABARD provided Producers Organisation Development Fund (PODF) for incorporation, motivation and mobilization of farmers towards formation of the company and supporting measures to meet out salary of CEO, office expenses and business plan etc for a period of 3 years.

 

  • Meanwhile the Federation has repaid entire loan 6.30 lakhs principal and the interest Rs.66038 to NABARD UNDER  FTTF during  2015-16as per due schedule.
  • Provided KCC loan to the120 members by availing the facility from TMB, Vilathikulam.
  • The programmes and accounts are constantly monitored and au dited respectively by the District Development Manager, NABARD, Tuticorin and company Auditor.
  • They are adopting suitable marketing strategy with the consultation of Dept. marketing and Agri business and enable the federation members to get fair price for their produces

 

Impacts Assessed

  • A unity among the farmers has been ensured. Through collective action, the federation members are in a capacity to sell their agricultural products for reasonable price.
  • The members are repaying the loan amount with any default, and there is higher probability for other members to avail the loan facilities.
  • Every 5th of the month the members are constantly participating the meeting and on the same day they repay the principal and interest amount
  • The effective functioning of the federation enable the them to upgrade  it as  a company with the support of NABARD..

Introduction

Bharathiyar Community Centre has been established by Vidiyel Trust at Kuralaiyampatti in Vilathikulam for creating a village resource model for the rural communities in Vilathikulam domain.

Purpose

Bharathiyar Community Centre aimed at contributing for creation of a village resource model for enabling the rural communities to internalise and apply the model in their areas for their sustainable growth.

 

Major Activities Executed in the Reporting Period

  • Installed bore well and water tank for watering the plants.
  • Constructed a Communication Office Building for strengthening the communication system of BCC.
  • Raised a cow shed and a goat shed for rearing cows and goats.
  • Rearing ducks and chickens in BCC.
  • Procured a mini-tractor with multiple utilities and placed in use for plough and removal of weeds.
  • Celebrated Pongal festival at Bharathiyar Community Centre on January 14th Dr. K.Jothimony, Executive Director of Vidiyel Trust and Mrs. Rosalind Santhi presided over the function. Pongal was cooked and the children rejoiced by shouting pongalo pangalo. Then, pongal was distributed to the chief guests and the participants.

Impacts Assessed

  • The saplings planted have fostered through watering and now the region looks lush.
  • The structures raised for promotion of mixed cattle farm have given hope for promoting a prototype for the rural masses to learn and adapt the cattle farm in their available lands.
  • A gobar gas unit war installed with a capacity of 4Cum with the support of Khaid and village industries commission to serve the purpose of demo and utilize dung available at the centre to encourage non conventional energy sources.

 

 

Introduction

Biomass is one of the renewable energy sources and also deemed to mitigate green house gas emissions. Considering the benefits of the biomass, Vidiyel Trust installed biomass gasifier unit at Kuralaiyampatti village, from which current energy is generated and supplied to the 13 acres of a farm land and to the nearby villages for the utilisation by the farmers to run motors.

 

Purpose

  • To increase the knowledge and application of biomass among the rural masses for strengthening the renewable energy sources.

Major Activities Executed in the Reporting Period

  • Ram Krishnan visited the biomass gasifier unit and inspected the operation level of the biomass gasifier unit.
  • About 109 persons from nearby villages visited the site and learned the process of renewal energy.
  • Around 83 college and school going students from Tuticorin and Vilathikulam areas visited the plant. Dr. K.Jothimony, Executive Director of Vidiyel Trust explained the process of the bio-mass gasifier plant.

 

Impacts Assessed

  • The energy extracted from the biomass gasifier unit is utilised for electrification of Bharathiyar Community Centre.
  • The local communities have realized the significance of the biomass by using the juliflora proposis tree woods as inputs.
  • The visitors are more interested to revisit the plants to learn about the renewal energy sources.
